Modern Marine Surveys is run by a surveyor who started taking boats apart at a repair yard at the age of twelve and studied marine power plants and vessel construction at New York City's only marine vocational high school. He worked for more than four decades as a marine technician and later shop foreman, became a Mercruiser Master Technician, holds ABYC certification and a USCG 100-ton licence, and worked on wood, steel, fibreglass and aluminium boats including the presidential yacht Sequoia. He now inspects boats for buyers and owners.
